Wall Hanging For A Very Special Couple

This past Sunday I had the pleasure of attending a very dear friend's wedding shower. For years Brandi and Chris have shared a very special love and have been waiting for just the right time to concrete their union. The couple's love of blues is always apparent. From their wedding to the decor of their new house, to their eye colors; various shades of blue has played a part in their lives. Along side blue you will always find neutrals with this pair. Warm and rich colors match their personalities and love not only for each other but all of those that are in their lives. Chris is a man's man who can appreciate the beauty and art in the world while Brandi is a sweet, slightly whimsical, no no nonsense classic kind of beauty. Both appreciate the outdoors, family, life and of course each other. Together they can do anything. So to help them commemorate this special union and the new chapter of their lives I knew I had to give them something special from my heart.

For their gift I really wanted to create something that would fit them. So I closed my eyes and tried to think of them. I imagines swirls of bright blues and rich browns, a few flowers and a couple of pearls for that touch of elegance.

Brandi being the simple elegance kind of girl I couldn't imagine tons of sparkles or glitter but I know in her heart she loves a bit of bling so CTMH Opaques Adhesive Gems - Mocha collection and a bit of Creme Brulee tinted Create-A-Shade Pearl Paint would be just the right touch.

In the Mocha Opaques Collection there are 3 colors to choose from; Cocoa, Chocolate, and light tan. I used all of them to help compliment the various shades of Browns and Tans in the background.

The opaques were placed in organic free formed swirls around and underneath the cluster of hand rolled flowers. The cluster of flowers and Opaques gave weight and depth to what would have been a flat piece.

Close To My Heart's Art Philosophy Cricut Collection Cartridge was the perfect place to find the Fluer De Lis and various rolled flower options. To make inking the flowers easier I left the entire pre-cut sheet of White Daisy cardstock on the Cricut mat and sponged and inked until I reached the color saturation and variation I wanted. I wanted to keep the flowers feeling a little lighter than the background and Fluer De Lis so I tried to ink more Crystal Blue, and Bamboo. I did use a little bit of Desert Sand and Twilight for more character, and just the faintest bit of Pacifica. I did not use Chocolate on the flowers, as it would have been a bit heavy for the appearance I was trying to achieve. The colors did mix and mingle a bit, creating this patina kind of shade of green/turquoise, which was exactly what I was trying to achieve.

For the Fluer De Lis I inked the base Crystal Blue color on while still on the mat but added depth and shading in Twilight and Pacifica once it was removed. For the background I simply sponged and inked an entire 12 by 12 sheet of White Daisy Cardstock in Choclate, Desert Sand, and Bamboo. By sponging so much cardstock I was worried I would eventually destroy the ink pads so to reduce wear and tear on the pads I simple placed matching reinker in the lid and directly dipped the sponge into the ink. I then sponged some of the ink out on the piece of wax paper I had under the piece to protect my work surface. When the sponge dried I then went back to the wax paper and picked the color back up or I went back to the lid. By using the reinker in the lid I was also able to achieve a better saturation of color in a shorter amount of time. If I had kept sponging off of the pad it would have taken much longer to get the depth of color I wanted, and I would have had to re-ink the pad many times. Normally I do not have to do this but this being such a large area to cover it made a difference. If I am working on a smaller piece using the pad would have been just fine.

Be sure that all layers are completely dry before adhering. If any layer is still damp either allow more time to dry or hit it with a heat tool. Just be aware that heating with heat tool does dull the color a little bit and if you have the color where you want it, it might be better to just wait for it to dry. If you do not allow all layers to dry completely the Mod podge will begin to pick up color and become tinted. Sometimes this is a good thing sometimes it is not.

I allowed all of the pieces to dry overnight before adhering them to a 12 by 12 artist canvas using Mod Podge. To ensure proper adhesion I Mod Podged the canvas as well as the back of the background. Then using an old gift card I began to smooth out all air bubbles. Once most of the air bubbles were worked out I then added a layer of Mod Podge and placed the Fluer De Leis. After a couple of coats of Mod Podge I sprayed the entire canvas with a CTMH Spray Pen filled with a mixture of Creme Brulee and Create-A-Shade Pearl Paint. This gave the entire canvas a soft golden pearl effect that didn't really show in the picture but added just that little bit of "Je ne sais quoi". After drying over night I added the hand rolled flowers with a bit of Liquid Glass and then the Opaques. To ensure that the Opaques would stay in place for a life time I coated them in Liquid Glass as well. Liquid Glass is not only an amazingly great adhesive it also drys clear for a epoxy look, this also helped the Opaques stand out more with out taking away from their natural beauty. My final step was to add a personal message and to sign the piece on the back frame in a permanent marker. I didn't not want the writing to show up over time so the wooden frame was the perfect place to hide it.

I love how this wall hanging turned out! More importantly than the love I had for this piece is the love the couple has. I was thrilled to see their eyes light up when they open their gift, and can not wait to share their special day with them! Funny how just a few sheets of White Daisy Cardstock can turn into something like this, and even more amazing is the love that has blossomed over the year with Brandi and Chris! I wish them more love than they thought possible, more happiness than they can imagine, and just enough clouds to really treasure the special love they share! Congratulations Brandi and Chris, I love y'all!

May SOTM – Friendship Bouquet Card

Sunflowers, summer, shades of yellows and blues are all things that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Here in Texas May is when Summer really starts to hit; the temperature soars into the 90s, pools are filled, the days are long and bright. Big, Bright, Sunny Yellow Sunflowers are just the perfect mate for May.

I have been thinking a lot about my girls lately. Usually we try to get together once a month for girl time but the last couple of months have been crazy for us and we just haven't had the chance. So to let them know that I still know they exist and to let them know I am thinking about them I wanted to make them something. Close To My Heart's May 2012 Stamp of the Month, Friendship Bouquet, is the perfect set to let them know I am thinking about them.

Creating this card was simple. First stamp the large sunflower in Chocolate on a 4” square of Colonial White toward the top left corner. Heat set with a heat gun. This will ensure the ink is completely dry and set so that when coloring it in with a blending pen the original image is less likely to run. You could use a solvent-based ink like Brown Staz-On, but I hate to stain my stamps so I take my chances with the heat set method. In most cases I notice the paper will start to pile before the ink will run badly enough to affect the end result.

Next take out a blender pen and your Crème Brulee, Chocolate, and Olive ink pads. Squeeze top of your ink pad to transfer some of the ink from the pad to the lid. (If you don't like to do this then you can use a drop of the matching re-inker in the lid, use the re-inker tip while open to spread the ink out a little bit.)

Using the brush tip of your blender pen begin to pick up a little bit of Buttercup and test on a scrap piece of paper.

If the color is the saturation you want start to color in the stamped sunflower image. If it seems too light then pick up a bit more ink, if too dark continue to color out on the scrap until you get to the desired shade.

Remember that as you color your image the blender pen will slowly fade to clear. That being the case, start in the areas you want shaded and as the color begins to fade move towards the edges where you want the color to be lighter. After completing the petals of the flower, color all of the Crème Brulee out on a scrap piece of paper. Next move onto the center in Chocolate and repeat the process. Finally stamp 2 leaves in Olive and blend as well.

To achieve a 3D flower just stamp and blend on a scrap piece of paper, fussy cut a flower and extra leaves. Sponge the edges of the base square in Chocolate, and put down the matching zip strip (I love those things!) Now pop up the extra flowers and leaves on 3D foam tape and align with the originally stamped image. Now as much as I like it now, I DO NOT like to fussy cut! This was a happy accident. I had accidentally smudged the flower while taking step by step pictures so I had to do something to hide save it.

For the final finishing touch stamp “Treasured Friend” in Pacifica on the front bottom right corner. If you have time (which I usually don't) covering the center in Liquid Glass adds a bit more dimension. For those girly girls out there add a sprinkle of Prisma Glitter to the top of the Liquid Glass before it dries for a see through sparkle and added glam.

Don't forget about the inside! Stamp the stemmed sunflower in Desert Sand and another sentiment in Pacifica on a 4” square of Colonial White. Inside adhere a 1” by 5” scrap of matching paper (faux zip strip), and then the stamped square of Colonial White. Write a personal note, sign, seal, and deliver to that special friend. Girls keep your eyes on the mail box, it's already on it's way.

Supply List:
Cardstock: Colonial White, Dreamin' (retired) but Pemberly would be lovely as well.
Embellishments: Liquid Glass and Prisma Glitter

P.S. This was my first tutorial! I would love to hear you thoughts about how I did and how I can improve. Thank you so much for looking! Until next time...

Say goodbye to those ugly sticker present tags!!!

Every year I spend countless hours wrapping Christmas gifts. Most years I am still wrapping into the wee hours of Christmas morning. Wrapping gifts is an obsession of mine, the thought of putting a Christmas gift in a bag scares me! It may seem silly that I spend so much time on something that is just going to get ripped off, but in our house it wouldn't be Christmas if our gifts weren't wrapped to the nines under the tree.

(Obsessed? Just a bit. These were empty boxes I wrapped just to take pictures with!)

Christmas morning is more enjoyable when we literally unwrap each of our gifts. Only one person at a time unwraps, this way my husband and I enjoy each of our children's faces when they slowly or quickly (Tasmanian Devil style) reveal their gifts. Instead of a crazy free for all of bags and tissue paper flying finished in 10 seconds, we leisurely sip coffee or hot chocolate as one child opens a gift while the others look at their gifts until breakfast time. In years past I would purchase special licensed character paper for each child, that way they knew exactly what gifts were theirs. Not this year. This year I decided to spend my money on better things, and bought the cheapest paper I could find.
A HUGE roll of brown craft paper.

Everyone's gifts will be wrapped up in this stuff. No worries, I will stamp some of the paper, and all gifts will be decked out in ribbons and bows. The presents will still be just a beautiful as years past.

When I purchased the ribbons and bows I took a peek at tags. Are you kidding me, have you seen the options out there?!? The most affordable ones are stickers on a roll. Been there, done that, once our oldest son unwrapped his little sisters princess underwear because those stickers always come off the present, and "Santa" just slapped the sticker on the closest present. Thus the years of over priced individual wrapping paper. The other options are beautiful pre-made embellished tags, usually individual (not on roll), have good adhesive, and are .... absolutely not what I am going to spend my money on since I just gave up the pretty paper! There is no way I am going to pay a dollar a piece for them, especially when the gift they are attached to may not even cost a dollar!

So what is a paper-crafter like me to do??? Oh that's right, *Ü* I have an entire roomed filled with goodies to make some of my own. With a little inspiration from Close To My Heart, the Cricut Art Philosophy Collection, Inks, Papers, Ribbon, and a bit of bling I will have plenty made just in time for Christmas. More personalized and beautiful than the store bought tags, at a fraction of the cost. Since I am using up my supplies do you think "Santa" will bring me some more? *Ü*

So if you are tired of cheap ugly sticker tags, and over priced pretty tags, just like I am, here is a bit of inspiration for you. Happy Crafting!

Supplies used are all Close To My Heart
