May SOTM – Friendship Bouquet Card

Sunflowers, summer, shades of yellows and blues are all things that make me feel warm and fuzzy inside. Here in Texas May is when Summer really starts to hit; the temperature soars into the 90s, pools are filled, the days are long and bright. Big, Bright, Sunny Yellow Sunflowers are just the perfect mate for May.

I have been thinking a lot about my girls lately. Usually we try to get together once a month for girl time but the last couple of months have been crazy for us and we just haven't had the chance. So to let them know that I still know they exist and to let them know I am thinking about them I wanted to make them something. Close To My Heart's May 2012 Stamp of the Month, Friendship Bouquet, is the perfect set to let them know I am thinking about them.

Creating this card was simple. First stamp the large sunflower in Chocolate on a 4” square of Colonial White toward the top left corner. Heat set with a heat gun. This will ensure the ink is completely dry and set so that when coloring it in with a blending pen the original image is less likely to run. You could use a solvent-based ink like Brown Staz-On, but I hate to stain my stamps so I take my chances with the heat set method. In most cases I notice the paper will start to pile before the ink will run badly enough to affect the end result.

Next take out a blender pen and your Crème Brulee, Chocolate, and Olive ink pads. Squeeze top of your ink pad to transfer some of the ink from the pad to the lid. (If you don't like to do this then you can use a drop of the matching re-inker in the lid, use the re-inker tip while open to spread the ink out a little bit.)

Using the brush tip of your blender pen begin to pick up a little bit of Buttercup and test on a scrap piece of paper.

If the color is the saturation you want start to color in the stamped sunflower image. If it seems too light then pick up a bit more ink, if too dark continue to color out on the scrap until you get to the desired shade.

Remember that as you color your image the blender pen will slowly fade to clear. That being the case, start in the areas you want shaded and as the color begins to fade move towards the edges where you want the color to be lighter. After completing the petals of the flower, color all of the Crème Brulee out on a scrap piece of paper. Next move onto the center in Chocolate and repeat the process. Finally stamp 2 leaves in Olive and blend as well.

To achieve a 3D flower just stamp and blend on a scrap piece of paper, fussy cut a flower and extra leaves. Sponge the edges of the base square in Chocolate, and put down the matching zip strip (I love those things!) Now pop up the extra flowers and leaves on 3D foam tape and align with the originally stamped image. Now as much as I like it now, I DO NOT like to fussy cut! This was a happy accident. I had accidentally smudged the flower while taking step by step pictures so I had to do something to hide save it.

For the final finishing touch stamp “Treasured Friend” in Pacifica on the front bottom right corner. If you have time (which I usually don't) covering the center in Liquid Glass adds a bit more dimension. For those girly girls out there add a sprinkle of Prisma Glitter to the top of the Liquid Glass before it dries for a see through sparkle and added glam.

Don't forget about the inside! Stamp the stemmed sunflower in Desert Sand and another sentiment in Pacifica on a 4” square of Colonial White. Inside adhere a 1” by 5” scrap of matching paper (faux zip strip), and then the stamped square of Colonial White. Write a personal note, sign, seal, and deliver to that special friend. Girls keep your eyes on the mail box, it's already on it's way.

Supply List:
Cardstock: Colonial White, Dreamin' (retired) but Pemberly would be lovely as well.
Embellishments: Liquid Glass and Prisma Glitter

P.S. This was my first tutorial! I would love to hear you thoughts about how I did and how I can improve. Thank you so much for looking! Until next time...

Say goodbye to those ugly sticker present tags!!!

Every year I spend countless hours wrapping Christmas gifts. Most years I am still wrapping into the wee hours of Christmas morning. Wrapping gifts is an obsession of mine, the thought of putting a Christmas gift in a bag scares me! It may seem silly that I spend so much time on something that is just going to get ripped off, but in our house it wouldn't be Christmas if our gifts weren't wrapped to the nines under the tree.

(Obsessed? Just a bit. These were empty boxes I wrapped just to take pictures with!)

Christmas morning is more enjoyable when we literally unwrap each of our gifts. Only one person at a time unwraps, this way my husband and I enjoy each of our children's faces when they slowly or quickly (Tasmanian Devil style) reveal their gifts. Instead of a crazy free for all of bags and tissue paper flying finished in 10 seconds, we leisurely sip coffee or hot chocolate as one child opens a gift while the others look at their gifts until breakfast time. In years past I would purchase special licensed character paper for each child, that way they knew exactly what gifts were theirs. Not this year. This year I decided to spend my money on better things, and bought the cheapest paper I could find.
A HUGE roll of brown craft paper.

Everyone's gifts will be wrapped up in this stuff. No worries, I will stamp some of the paper, and all gifts will be decked out in ribbons and bows. The presents will still be just a beautiful as years past.

When I purchased the ribbons and bows I took a peek at tags. Are you kidding me, have you seen the options out there?!? The most affordable ones are stickers on a roll. Been there, done that, once our oldest son unwrapped his little sisters princess underwear because those stickers always come off the present, and "Santa" just slapped the sticker on the closest present. Thus the years of over priced individual wrapping paper. The other options are beautiful pre-made embellished tags, usually individual (not on roll), have good adhesive, and are .... absolutely not what I am going to spend my money on since I just gave up the pretty paper! There is no way I am going to pay a dollar a piece for them, especially when the gift they are attached to may not even cost a dollar!

So what is a paper-crafter like me to do??? Oh that's right, *Ü* I have an entire roomed filled with goodies to make some of my own. With a little inspiration from Close To My Heart, the Cricut Art Philosophy Collection, Inks, Papers, Ribbon, and a bit of bling I will have plenty made just in time for Christmas. More personalized and beautiful than the store bought tags, at a fraction of the cost. Since I am using up my supplies do you think "Santa" will bring me some more? *Ü*

So if you are tired of cheap ugly sticker tags, and over priced pretty tags, just like I am, here is a bit of inspiration for you. Happy Crafting!

Thanksgiving is only 17 Days away...

Every year my Aunt throws an amazing party for Thanksgiving. All family members are invited to attend along with their families, and it is a blast! Everywhere you look there is something going on. The ladies are gathered in the kitchen putting the finishing touches on yummy southern dishes, the men are gathered around the pit smoking turkeys and hams, the teens (and an adventurous Dad or two) are in the yard playing tag football, and the kids are running from the sand pit to the horse pen and back. There is always plenty of catching up, visiting, and laughing going on, not to mention a few rounds of dominoes. All in attendance leave late in the evening with bellies full, loaded up with "to-go" plates for later and a smile from ear to ear across their face. I looked forward to every Thanksgiving on "the ranch" nearly as much as Christmas morning. I love to bake so every year I ask if there is something I can bring and every year I get the same response "Just your family and an appetite." So every year I bring a small gift to say thank you. This year I was lost at what to give, then Close To My Heart came to the rescue.

This Thanksgiving Card using My Acrlix So Grateful Stamp Set is the perfect inspiration. So with just a couple of weeks till the big day I am off to make a few of these and maybe some orange slice pumpkins. Happy Crafting!

On This Day .... I have found some inspiration!

I have always wondered what to do with the On This Day Stamp Set . In this video from Close to My Heart there are a ton of ideas and great inspiration.

Use the any of the Month stamps to truly personalize a birthday card and remember the little details. Use any of the "squarish" stamps to create a random tone on tone background paper that is unique. Of course don't forget to use it to mark the date for a picture of event on a layout. The ideas are endless!!

Aside from the stamp the color combination options are gorgeous! Use any color with the Craft and Bamboo card stocks. Such as Red Barn or Outdoor Denim for a country feel. Or choose another set of neutrals to go with the Twilight and Sweet leaf accents. Grey Flannel and Grey Wool would complement beautifully, or even Parchment and Vanilla Cream for a softer more subtle look.

Finding inspirtation and creativity is as Fast, Simple and Easy as sitting back and enjoying a good craft project. Keep you eyes and heart open for the idea coming your way.

Finding My Style...

Spring has sprung here in Central Texas! The wildflowers are in full bloom, the weather is sunny and perfect, and fields are being planted all over. Our Family loves this time of year. Endless evening hours are spent outside together. We plant our garden, play in the yard, grill supper, and just enjoy each other. In a stroke of luck I placed a winning bid on a family photo shoot at a crop for Relay for Life. With the clock ticking on cooler weather, bluebonnets, and available weekends this Sunday is the day. Preparing for all 5 of us is getting interesting. Each of us is so unique with our own sense of style and tastes getting us to "match" but keep our personality has proven to be more of a challenge than I had originally anticipated.

Choosing my own outfits has made me wonder about my style and what it really is? Is it Shabby Chic, Modern, Traditional, or all of the above? In the end I have decided it just depends on my mood and what I have found to inspire me at any given moment.

Right now my style and personality is in love with:

1. Damask Backgrounds:

I am in love with using Two-Step Backgrounds stamp set! With this stamp set I can customize the print to match any color scheme. Two-Step Backgrounds is a must have set! Purchase it here.

My go to colors are:
Use them alone, all together, or with any neutral! Stock up on them because I bet you will reach for them over and over again!

Graphics I can not get enough of...
The Hope for Japan Stamp set is so me. I love the hearts, swirls, and flowers; it only cost 5 bucks; and it is being sold for a very charitable cause!!! Close To My Heart will donate 100% of the profits to the American Red Cross efforts in Japan. So me! Get it here.

Who knows what I will wear come Sunday but in the end it really will not matter. I will have captured memories of this point in our life's. Smiles, laughter, and small moments I will cherish, share and love. For me that's what really matters the most, and I just can wait!

P.S. Please pray that our 16 year old son, our 5 year old daughter, and our 2 year old crazy maniac son will all cooperate & smile at the same time!

***** UPDATE: The kids were great! I can not wait to see the final results! All 3 smiled, and played along. I guess when you tell them they are off the hook for Mother's Day if these come out nice everyone does there part. I am such a blessed Mom and I could not be more grateful for the family I have and the memories we are creating!*****
